Lake Ophelia National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1988 to protect the important Mississippi/Red River floodplain ecosystem. Old River Lock is fifty miles northwest of Baton Rouge, connecting the Atchafalaya and Mississippi rivers. Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge is home to some of the last remaining, least disturbed timber in the Mississippi River Delta, the bottomland hardwoods at Bayou Cocodrie NWR.
