Choke Canyon, southcentral Texas

Choke Canyon Dam is on the Frio River in Live Oak County, Texas and is used for recreation, among other things. Construction was completed in 1981. It has a normal surface area of 41 square miles. It is owned by Department of Interior, Bureau of Reclamation.

 

Choke Canyon is of earthen construction. The core is upstream facing, concrete. The foundation is soil. Its height is 128 feet with a length of 1950 feet. Maximum discharge is 250584 cubic feet per second. Its capacity is 1.083e+06 acre feet. Normal storage is 695271 acre feet. It drains an area of 5530 square miles.
