Howland, central Maine

Howland Dam is on the Piscataquis River in Penobscot County, Maine and is used for hydroelectric power and recreation purposes. Construction was completed in 1916. Its normal surface area is 270 acres. It is owned by Ppl Maine, Llc.

 

Howland is concrete, a gravity dam. Its height is 16.8 feet with a length of 660 feet. Maximum discharge is 42525 cubic feet per second. Its capacity is 4370 acre feet. Normal storage is 3400 acre feet. It drains an area of 1500 square miles.
