Lake Peigneur is saltwater lake near New Iberia, Louisiana with a depth of 1,300 feet. Interestingly, before 1980 it was a freshwater lake, only three feet deep. The sudden transformation occurred in a November 21, 1980 miscalculation, when an oil rig in the lake punctured the roof of a salt mine that was below the lake.
