Lake Sidney Lanier Vacation and Resort PropertiesLake Sidney Lanier is formed by Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River in Forsyth County, Georgia and is used for flood control, hydroelectric power and recreation purposes. Construction was completed in 1958. At normal levels it has a surface area of 74 square miles. It is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake property. Lake Lanier Islands is the main resort area on the lake, providing picnic, camping, beaches, a water park, tennis, golf course, boat rentals, and hotel accomodations. Over the years recreation has grown by leaps and bounds to nearly 7 million visitors annually at Lake Sidney Lanier. Today recreation is an important benefit of the lake. Seventy-six recreational areas have been developed around the lake. These include 49 parks operated directly by the Corps, 10 marinas, and Lake Lanier Islands. The remaining areas are leased to county and city governments such as the Boy Scouts. Lake Lanier is one of the most visited federally operated lakes in the nation.
