Sam Rayburn Dam And Reservoir, east Texas

Sam Rayburn Dam and Reservoir is on the Angelina River in Jasper County, Texas and is used for drinking water, recreation, flood control and hydroelectric power purposes. Construction was completed in 1965. At normal levels it has a surface area of 179 square miles. It is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

 

Sam Rayburn Dam And Reservoir is of earthen construction. The core is earth. The foundation is rock, soil. Though originally completed in 1965, the structure was modified in 1982. Its height is 130 feet with a length of 12400 feet. Maximum discharge is 249700 cubic feet per second. Its capacity is 6.3362e+06 acre feet. Normal storage is 2.8982e+06 acre feet. It drains an area of 3449 square miles.
